The Heavy Rigid (HR) Class Licence allows you to drive:

    Any prime mover attached to a semi-trailer or a rigid vehicle towing a trailer with a GVM of more than 9 tonnes plus any unladen converter dolly.

    Also includes vehicles in Class HR.

How to upgrade to the HC Licence Class | HC Licence New South Wales

You must have held a Class MR or HR licence for at least one year. P2 licence holders cannot upgrade to this class.

We have two available courses:

One Day Express Course

    Automatic/Synchromesh Truck – must know how to reverse a trailer or

    Constant Mesh(Road Ranger) Truck – must know how to operate with Constant Mesh gearbox and reverse a trailer

Two Day Course

    Constant Mesh(Road Ranger) Truck – must be proficient in the use of a manual transmission.

Heavy Combination (HC class) vehicle licence

Heavy Combination (HC class) heavy vehicle licences allow you to drive:

    Prime movers with attached single semi-trailer.

    Heavy Rigid (HR class) vehicles with attached trailer that has a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 9,000 kg.

You will also be allowed to tow:

    One other trailer in addition to any trailer or semi-trailer mentioned above, with a maximum GVM of 9,000 kg.

    An unladen converter dolly or low loader dolly as defined in the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014.

To gain an HC class licence, you must no longer be a provisional licence holder and have held :

    A Car (C class) licence for at least 3 years, and

A Medium Rigid (MR class) or HR class licence for at least 1 year.

What is a HC driver?

A heavy combination (HC) truck driver is an someone who handles and drives:

    trucks or prime movers attached to a single semi - trailer or;

    heavy rigid vehicle trailer combinations including an unladen converter dolly with three or more axles or;

    any towed trailer with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) more than 9 tonnes.

    HC trucks are articulated vehicles which means they have a pivot point that sits either behind the prime mover or the HR vehicle. This is different to rigid vehicles which move as one, straight body.

Heavy combination vehicle drivers work in industries including agriculture, construction, and warehouse transportation. Many HC drivers work in shift and driver interstate routes which means they might spend days on the road.

HC driver job includes:

    Loading and unloading items on the truck, restraining goods according NHVR guidelines, and safely delivering goods to customers.

    Conducting basic truck inspections and maintenance

    Manoeuvering vehicles safely and maintaining a work diary as required.

 

What is a HC licence?

A HC licence is the class of licence required to drive heavy combination motor vehicles. A HC licence fits within the broader group of heavy vehicle licences which also include LR, MR, HR, and MC.

A NSW HC licence is recognised across the country although every state and territory has a different regulatory body. In NSW, a HC licence is issued by the Road and Maritime Service (RMS), formerly, the RTA. The practical training is conducted by an RMS accredited Registered Training Organisation

Light Rigid (LR) class licence allows you to drive

Any motor vehicle more than 4.5 tonnes GVM but no more than 8 tonnes GVM.

Any single towed trailer with a GVM not greater than 9 tonnes.

Also includes any vehicle with a GVM of no more than 8 tonnes which carries more than 12 adults including the driver.

Note: There are no restrictions on the number of axles for this class of licence

Also includes vehicles in Class C.

Light rigid vehicle is one with a load of 4.5 tonnes GVM to 8 tonnes GVM weight and also one, which can carry only 12 adults at a time, including the driver. For getting a light rigid vehicle Licence, you would need to undergo road training with an expert instructor who can guide you with handling the vehicle efficiently on the roads.
