Join our exclusive 2024Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek to experience the famous Tiji Festival celebrated in Lo-Manthang from 05th May to 07th May 2024. Booking is now open!

A time of celebration and religious pilgrimage for the people of Lo, the annual Tiji Festival is an extraordinary spectacle of good triumphing over evil that will give you unique insights into the rich cultural legacy of the long forbidden Kingdom of Mustang, tucked away in remote, rugged mountains on the border of Nepal and Tibet.

For three days, monks wearing masks and colorful costumes swirl to the rhythm of traditional drums, horns, and Buddhist chanting, re-enacting the battle of Dorje Shunu against his demon father to save the people of Mustang from drought, their animals from infertility, and the land from other disasters.

Initially a religious ceremony, Tiji has evolved over time to become a symbol of hope, strength, and peace. It is believed that simply attending it will bring merit to its observers. Days before is begins, the people of Lo start to make their way to Lo-Manthang, filling the trails with pilgrims and mule caravans.

Like the members of the royal family, who personally attend dressed in their best finery, they come to watch Dorje Shunu slay a straw effigy of the demon and free Mustang of evil spirits. An explosion of muskets concludes the celebrations, marking the end of the harsh dry winter and the beginning of the growing season.

This is an outstanding journey into one of the last Tibetan cultures existing today. A true gem of the Himalayas, virtually unchanged for centuries, set in the breathtaking wilderness.

Our Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek is available on three different itineraries, outlined below:

  • Option I: a classic 17-day trek, which can be shortened by driving back Lo-Manthang to Jomsom after the Tiji Festival.
  • Option II: a 10-day jeep tour, perfect if you have less time or prefer not to walk all the way to Lo-Manthang.
  • Option III: a slightly slower pace 13-day jeep tour, perfectly timed around the Tiji Festival.

Lying at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong Khola, Kagbeni was originally surrounded by a defensive wall. Two female and male clay khenis or ghost eaters, remains of ancient Bön traditions, still guard its gates at each end of the village. Kagbeni is also home to an impressive Buddhist monastery and the ruined Kag Khar fort, which once housed 108 rooms.

At the northern end of the village, a police checkpost marks the beginning of the restricted area. We have our special permits stamped and take our very first steps into the Kingdom of Mustang, climbing along the east bank of the Kali Gandaki until we reach the village of Chhuksang [3050m], with spectacular views of red organ-pipe eroded cliffs and inaccessible caves. After crossing the river, we head towards a huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliffs above, forming a tunnel through which the Kali Gandaki flows. We keep on going, leaving the Kali Gandaki Valley, and climb steeply up a rocky gully to Chele [3100m].

A further 3-hour walk through similar up-and-down terrain, across the Bhena La [3830m] and Beg La [3840m], takes us to Syangboche [3850m]. Or, from Samar, we can also take an alternative route through amazing canyons to visit the famous Ranchung Cave, also known as Chungsi Cave, where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated. A single monk now cares for this holy site, reached via a steep 10-minute climb above the Syangboche Khola.

Passing typical Tibetan villages, houses and imposing chortens painted in red, yellow, black and white, we climb to the highest point of our trek thus far, the Nyi La [4020m], and descend steeply to the village of Ghami [3510m] where we break for lunch. The trail then drops to the Ghami Khola. We cross it and continue uphill past a spectacular 305-metre-long mani wall, one of the longest in Nepal, to the Choya La [3870m]. Here we begin a pleasant, gentle descent to Charang [3560m], with its spectacular gompa, chorten and five-storey dzong.

Trekking: 7-8 hours.

Crossing a stunning desert-like landscape, we follow an easy trail to the recently restored Sungda Chorten and climb across the Lo La [3950m]. Finally, we catch our first sight of the ancient walled city of Lo-Manthang [3840m] and its imposing four-storied palace, home of the last King of Mustang (Raja) or Lo Gyelbu, Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista (d.2016). A descent through the plateau of Lo-Manthang takes us to the city's only entrance. We spend the afternoon at the Tiji Festival, which begins today.

There is so much to see in the nearby Chhosar Valley. After breakfast, we take a jeep excursion to the Jhong cave complex, an amazing multistorey structure of interconnected dwellings reached by ladders and thought to be 2500 years old, and to Nyphu Gompa [3760m], carved into the side of a soaring cliff near the village of Garphu [3897m]. The afternoon will be spent in Lo-Manthang. The town, founded in 1440 by the first King of Lo, Amedpal (1388-1447), is surrounded by a 6-metre-high and 725-metre-long wall with massive square towers. Within these walls are some of Nepal’s finest and largest Tibetan Buddhist gompas. We can visit Thubchen Lakhang, Jampa Lhakhang, Chhoede Gompa and Choprang Gompa, as well as the royal palace, and then watch the masked monks of Chhoede Gompa perform ritual dances at the Tiji Festival.

Again, plenty of options this morning. We can visit the King’s summer palace in Thinggar [4030m] or Mustang’s largest monastery, perched on a hillside above the village of Namgyal [3870m], known as the Monastery of Victory. Alternatively, we can climb to a viewpoint on a hill just north of Lo-Manthang for stunning panoramas of the entire valley. In the afternoon, we say put in Lo-Manthang to watch the final celebrations of the Tiji Festival outside the King’s palace and then outside the city walls, where demons will be banished amidst loud cries and the firing of muskets.

Walking in the morning to avoid dust, we take a different route out of Lo-Manthang [3840m]. The trail first climbs steadily to the Chogo La [4230m], the highest point on our trek. Then, it’s an easy downhill to Ghar Gompa [3920m], with its amazing painted carved stones. Built in the 8th century, this is one of the oldest active gompas in Nepal. Legend has it that anyone who makes a wish there will see it fulfilled. Give it a try! Going further down the valley, we cross the Mui La [4170m]. The trail then drops down a steep eroded gully overshadowed by red rock towers to the upper part of Dhakmar [3820m]. According to legend, the dramatic cliffs above the village, dotted with ancient cave dwellings, were stained red by the blood of the Balmo, a huge demoness that Guru Rinpoche defeated in a duel.

Additional Information

Accommodation

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will stay in 3-star hotels, on a bed and breakfast basis. On trek and during the Tiji Festival, we use trekking lodges. These are locally owned and provide accommodation in basic single, double and triple rooms, depending on your preference. Rooms with attached bathrooms and hot showers are sometimes available.

Single supplement

Accommodation on all proposed treks, tours and climbing packages is based on a twin-sharing basis. A single supplement of US$ 350 will apply if you are a solo traveller or do not wish to share.

Meals

Our package covers all meals during the trek (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Trekking lodges offer hearty Nepali dishes like dal bhat, as well as a variety of more familiar Indian or international dishes to sustain your energy levels during the trek. Vegetarian options are always available.

What you carry

On trek you will only need to carry your daypack for personal items like your water bottle, camera, waterproof jacket, valuables, sunscreen, medication etc. A porter will carry your main luggage. If you are likely to need any additional items like extra warm layers from that main luggage, your guide will let you know the evening before. Your daypack should be comfortable and stay light, a few kilograms at most.

Transportation

In the Kathmandu Valley, we use a variety of vehicles including cars, jeeps, vans, minibuses, buses and coaches, depending upon the size of the group. From Pokhara to Jomsom, and from Jomsom to Pokhara, we fly local airlines. Once we start our trek, we walk, sometimes supported by yaks, horses or donkeys. For trekkers that cannot or prefer not to walk too long, we can hire jeeps all the way to Lo-Manthang and back. If our flight back from Jomsom to Pokhara is cancelled, private jeeps can also be hired to drive all the way back to Pokhara.

Trekking staff

At Himalaya Trekking Team, we are passionate about Nepal, its mountains and its people. All our guides are Nepali, government-licensed professionals. They are there to look after you and they are the persons you should go to with any problems, concerns and questions. They are not only highly experienced, having spent many years in the field. They are also trained in remote first-aid and emergency procedures. Like our friendly and reliable porters, who are an integral part of our team, they are selected for their incredible local knowledge and their desire to share it with you. Together they take every precaution to ensure smooth logistics and to provide the highest quality services while keeping you safe, happy and well throughout your trip.

Porters

A porter will carry your main luggage. Normally we provide one porter for every two trekkers on trekking lodge and camping treks, depending on your luggage and the equipment we need.

Health

There are no specific health requirements to travel Nepal. However, to enjoy trekking in the Himalayas, you should be reasonably fit and physically prepared to walk up to 6-8 hours per day for several consecutive days. Our Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek is well within the capabilities of all fit hikers with a positive attitude, self-confidence and strong determination. You should nevertheless consult your doctor to obtain up-to-date advice on altitude sickness prevention and to check whether you require any specific vaccinations or other preventive medication whilst traveling in Nepal. Please note that some medication, including anti-malarial drugs, can have side effects at altitude. Discuss this carefully with your doctor. There are small health posts for emergency treatment along the route. But, in such remote areas, these have limited equipment, limited medical staff and limited medication. We therefore strongly recommend that you carry your own first-aid kit as well as sufficient quantities of any medication you are taking (together with a spare pair of glasses if you need any).

Altitude sickness

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a serious issue. It occurs as the result of failure to adapt to a higher altitude and can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness. Most people living at sea level can climb rapidly to a height of 2800m without getting ill. Above 2800m, the likelihood of being affected increases as you ascend. To minimise the effects of altitude, it is best to ascend relatively slowly, less than 300m per day, in order to allow acclimatisation to occur. Your best strategy above 2800m is to take your time, not to walk too fast, and to drink plenty of water. Poor acclimatisation results in symptoms including headache, nausea, sleeplessness, shortness of breath, and swelling of the fingers and glands. If you experience such symptoms, please consult your guide. The only cure for AMS is to descend to a lower altitude,at least 500m, to recover. Your guide's decision in this matter is final.

“Nothng is too much trouble !”

This setup is "first class" in every way. . Their particular strength is to be able to tailor activities to specific interests of each and every member of their group, taking into account weather and often difficult issues such as the need to change transport arrangements as local conditions dictate. The principals, Obi and Uttam, together with their guides are considerate and knowledgeable. Nothing at all was a trouble. This was my 3rd trip to Nepal ; Himalaya Trekking Team are in my experience, simply "brilliant". I was, and continue to be surprised at the quality of service for such a modest price.

“Outstanding value and service with 'family feel'”

he Himalaya Trekking Team are a professional, organised team with a distinctly friendly, 'family feel.' We took a 2 week trek into Upper Mustang which was superb! Obi and Uttam together with the porters, make each trekking day a pleasure. Everything was well organised without it feeling like a 'military expedition.' Nothing was ever too much trouble, any request/need could be accommodated. We started the trek as a client and finished it feeling like a member of the Himalaya Trekking Team family. We will be using this wonderful group of people again for our next adventure.

“Total professionals and amazing value.”

From the very first email to Mr Uttam I have been very impressed with how totally professional the Himalaya Trekking Team have been. We took the 2017 Tiji Festival trek to Upper Mustang, a trip that lasted two weeks. During that time Mr Uttam Mr OB Mr Suntar and the three required porters were an absolute pleasure to be with. We couldn't have found a more skilled, hard working, helpful and friendly group of guys to guide and look after us. I cannot recommend this company highly enough and would/will definitely give my friends at the Himalaya Trekking Team a call to arrange my next trek. Thanks again guys, love you all.

“Tiji Festival and Cultural Tour”

Himalaya trekking team is a highly ethical trekking company who donate a % of their fee to local community schools.
Their specialty is flexibility ; whatever challenges present in remote rural areas, they are able to seamlessly amend itineraries affected by climate and changing local conditions.
Messrs O B Gurung and Uttam Adhikari run a first class operation which is deserving of the highest praise and recommendation. I do plan a further trip to Nepal in 2019 and will consider no other operation

“Trek from Jomsom to Tiji Festival at Lo Manthang and return”

Our hosts OB Gurung and Uttam Atikari operated this 18-day tour out of Kathmandu for eleven trekkers and it was great. With the help of a really responsive and supportive crew of porters and partner guest-houses, this was a brilliant visit to a world-heritage-standard festival through amazing country. Good food and excellent value for money. While we did walk some steepish sections, the walk is moderate (it’s not mountain climbing!). A real treat, well done all and thank you OB and Uttam, you made it special.

“To Tiji Festival & Back”

Despite doing, at least, two serious hikes a year, going trekking to Nepal was never on my bucket list. But when a mate, who had used this trekking company last year to go to the Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang, called me and said that he was looked after so well that he wanted to go again, I said, 'OK. I'll come too.'

As it turned out, I had an experience of a lifetime but more on this company, nothing was an issue. On day 4, one of us, EJ, got sick and, hearing about the Buddhist burials, the rest of us had a conference that evening, if the worst happened, would we ask for a fire, earth or air burial. But by the next morning, our guides had mustered up a jeep to get EJ to our next overnight stop. How good was that?

Another time, we trekked a mile up a track and, like Mary & Joseph, we were told, 'There's no room in the inn.' So, after some deliberation, we trekked the mile back down to then pile into a 24 seater high-axled bus that drove on the dry river bed to a guest house down range. A week later, on the night before flying home from Kathmandu, we asked one of our guides, 'How come there was a bus in the middle of nowhere for us?' He just shrugged his shoulders and said, 'I called it in.' Like nothing was too hard for them to organise.

On another day, we were worried whether the high altitude was affecting us, so, the guides pulled out an oxygen saturation measuring gadget and we all checked ourselves. They were full of (good) surprises.

“Adventures in Upper Mustang”

OB ane Uttam guided us on adventurous treks to the Tiji festival, from Jomsom to Lo Manthang. We stayed in interesting villages and guesthouse hotels along the way. Our hosts and our Nepalese porters were very helpful in carefully carrying our backpacks. We had magnificent mountains on every horizon, with amazing sunsets. Many western comforts were not always available, and communication with the outside world was limited, but this is due to the remoteness of the area. It was an experience we will never forget, and at a very reasonable cost.

“Kathmandu to LoManthang & back - a hidden world.”

The Himalayan trekking team gave us the Ultimate Nepalese experience into Mustang. OB & Uttam & their team of porters made this epic tour a most memorable & fulfilling experience.
We had all connections, accomodation & meals sorted . We ventured on incredible mountain treks , visited remote villages , entered hidden cave temples & witnessed the vivid color & sound of the Tiji festival - all the while knowing that our guides were there to support us in this foreign land - thank you !

Faultless Organisation, Outstanding Service !

After a 3rd Visit to Nepal and Mustang, I am about to book a 4th (yes, a 4th) with this incomparable boutique trek and sightseeing company. The quality of personal service is extraordinary. As a smaller organisation, using the same experienced group of porters and guides from season to season, HTT produce an experience which is flexible and mindful of each and every group member's needs but executed with military precision.

Upper Mustang and Tiji Festival Trek 2019

A dream come true. OB and Uttam were great guides, always helpful and flexible, and our porters were terrific. Scenery was awesome, trekking lodges comfortable with good food, and weather fine and sunny almost every day. The festival is colourful and fascinating, and the various trips to monasteries well worth it. I would recommend this trek to everyone, you will not regret it. Chris Melbourne

Trekking in Upper Mustang Nepal

This was the first time I had been to Nepal and the first time I have done organised trekking. Himalaya Trekking Team were fantastic. Apart from the organisation being flawless, the team themselves were such a nice group of people. Never a frown. Always happy to assist in any way possible. I am not the most agile of people and when some of the tracks became challenging, one of the guides was always there to patiently assist me through the more difficult spots. Their local knowledge really added to the experience. The trek itself was awesome. We visited numerous temple complexes and the walled city of Lo Mantang was great. Our visit coincided with the Tigi Festival which was an experience in itself. On our return trek back to Jonsom, our team was advised that the airport would be closed the day we were due to fly out. Our guides managed to pull off what seemed to be impossible and organise transport to get us into Jonsom a day early and then were able to secure flights out and avoid a nasty bus trip. A super effort on the part of Himalaya Trekking Team. And the best part was that the team are all Nepalese so the money stays in the local community where it is most needed.More

Upper Mustang and Tiji festival, May-June 2019

We had a great time with OB and Utam duding us on this trek. The scenery of Mustang is incredibly beautiful, the locals are very friendly and welcoming and OB and Utam and their team members were simply outstanding. Importantly, all members of our group, chosen by Christopher, were easy to get along with and interesting to be around. We will gladly do more trips with the Himalaya Trekking Team. Susi and Anreas
