The government is aiming to enhance digital literacy to a minimum of 50% from the present level of 15 percent over the next three years, Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a recent meeting. Presenting awards at an event to winners of Digital India Week's online quiz competition on cyber safety and cyber awareness, he stated that 100% digital literacy was necessary to transform India into a truly digitized society. Highlighting the fact that the world was closely following developments that are taking place in India, he said that it was the responsibility of India's youth to meet up with the rising expectations. Prasad stated that 4,000 incubators have come to India looking for investment possibilities in the areas of IT and electronic manufacturing. He also stated that knowledge economy will prove to be one of the major factors in bringing such a change and that the initiatives taken by the central government in this area will put India in a more favorable position. The Telecom minister had also recently claimed that his ministry was planning to reach out to as many as 50 crore internet subscribers over the last 6-7 months. This plan also includes the installation of 2,500 Wi-Fi hotspots at 256 places by the time of the next festival. This has been regarded as a part of Digital India initiative to make sure that citizens have access to all government services and acquire all sorts of benefits from information and communication technology.
