Composition Sapphire is a kind of precious gemstone, a variation of the mineral corundum that forms in prismatic rhombohedral crystals. Madagascar is the world leader in sapphire processing, particularly from its mines around the city of Ilakaka while sapphires from Kashmir, Burma, or Sri Lanka are the most coveted.
