Comparison BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 : Which One Is Best
Category: Technology
BlackBerry, what have you done? After years of decline, mediocre hardware and software and near collapse we’d all given up on you. Even your most loyal fans (and they are really loyal) were finally prepared to move on… and then you make this. BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 Spoiler alert! The BlackBerry Priv is very good. It’s not perfect, but it’s far better than anyone had any right to expect from a first generation Android device that melds so many polar opposites: touchscreen and physical keyboard, premium design and rubberised finish, Google’s OS and good security. BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 Edge comparison: design and build quality BlackBerry built its reputation on smartphones with QWERTY keyboards. The BlackBerry Priv is no exception, and its keyboard is hidden below a slide-out curved screen. It’s an interesting approach, enabling you to have a keyboard when you need it and get shot of it when you don’t, but it does add bulk. The Priv is 9.4 mm thick and weighs 192 g, which is a little chunky when you compare it to the Sony Xperia Z5, Sony is believed to roll out the Android 6.0 upgrade by the end of the year. Even if Sony’s list of Xperia devices that will receive the Android M upgrade is out and about, no clear dates have been provided for the users. According to Sony Mobile blog, a test build of the Android 6.0 M has reached Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact devices, however this only targets an elite group of users. According to the same source, the upgrade will soon reach Xperia handsets in the upcoming future. According to Phone Arena, the Stamina Mode will be enhanced so that it will improve the battery duration on all Xperia Z5 devices. The latter functionality can improve the battery life by limiting some background procedures. Even if the Android M upgrade will bring major battery improvements, Sony is planning on updating its software.. We think it’s Sony Xperia Z5 best yet. BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 Edge comparison: display The BlackBerry Priv has a curved 5.43-inch display delivering 2,560 x 1,440 at 540 ppi. It’s an AMOLED with high brightness mode for outdoor viewing, and it’s protected by fourth-generation Gorilla Glass. The curved bits display charging progress and app icons; tapping on them opens little windows that enable you to check notifications or updates without launching the full apps. The blacks are nice and deep given it’s an LCD screen with a backlight rather than an OLED, and at 5.2in 1080p resolution is enough to make everything look pretty sharp. It’s a Super AMOLED with QHD resolution just like the BlackBerry, but because it’s a little smaller, it has higher pixel density: 428 ppi compared with the BlackBerry’s 540 ppi With protected Scratch-resistant glass, oleophobic coating,Triluminos display and X-Reality Engine . BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 Edge comparison: processor and storage The BlackBerry has a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 backed with Adreno 418 graphics and teamed up with 3 GB of RAM. Storage is 32 GB, and it supports microSD to take the storage up to 200 GB. The Xperia Z5 has Android OS, v5.1.1 (Lollipop), planned upgrade to v6.0 (Marshmallow), Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810, Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2 GHz Cortex-A57 and backed with Adreno 430 graphics, and teamed up with 3 GB of RAM. Storage is 32 GB, and it supports microSD to take the storage up to 200 GB. We’d expect it to leave the BlackBerry eating dust in performance benchmarks. BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 Edge comparison: camera The BlackBerry’s main camera is an 18 MP and secondary 2 MP. The Blackberry Priv model with optical image stabilization and 4K video recording. That puts it at the very top of the Android market in terms of camera quality. The Sony Xperia Z5 have 23 MP and secondary 5.1 MP(1080p) with HDR images here it comes with 5520 х 4140 pixels and 4K video recording. The optical image stabilization makes a huge difference in low light, and its nighttime performance is really impressive. One area where the Sony Xperia Z5 does have a chance of flattening everyone is the camera. After all, Sony makes most of the top phone camera sensors, and it has packed a new and (for now) exclusive 23-megapixel sensor into the Xperia Z5 family phones. That’s a whole lot of pixels. What sensor exactly? We don’t know its name as no 23-megapixel model is detailed in the Sony Exmor sensor library. Our best bet is that it’s a modified take on the IMX230 used in the Moto X Play and its siblings. Other than top resolution, the Xperia Z5 Dual camera’s calling card is its hybrid focusing system, using both phase detection and contrast detection. Phase detection is the sort of focusing using by DSLRs, and tends to be faster than standard contrast detection, which just involves looking at what the sensor sees and working out what ‘looks’ sharpest as the autofocus moves back and forth. There are a grand 192 phase detection points across the sensor, and sure enough focusing is very fast. BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 comparison: software It’s the software that makes the Priv interesting: instead of BlackBerry OS it’s running Lollipop. It’s customized slightly and includes some additional apps, including security monitor DTEK, BlackBerry’s own secure communications software and a whole bunch of BlackBerry apps, all of which are now available in the Play Store. The Sony Xperia Z5 Dual runs Android 5.1 Lollipop at launch, rather than the brand new Marshmallow, and the interface laid on top is dead simple, simpler even than vanilla Android M in some respects. There’s just the array of home screens and the apps menu, and as much as possible the space is given over to your apps and shortcuts, or left blank. Not bloaty interface bits here. Sounds good, right? It is. But after coming from checking out Android M 6.0, the Sony Xperia Z5’s look does feel a little bit stiff. Why so serious, Sony? Still, if you like a nice pared-back UI, Sony’s is better BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 Edge comparison: battery The BlackBerry’s battery is huge: 3,410 mAh, which BlackBerry says delivers 22.5 hours of mixed use. With a comparatively titchy 2,900 mAh battery the Sony Xperia Z5 ought to be getting its coat and heading for the door, but wait: it has a quick charge mode that gives you a full charge in just one hour, and it has wireless charging too. It also has not one but two power saving modes that can double or even triple battery life. Go for the most extreme options and you’ll get two days of battery life, albeit in a grayscale, not much happening kind of way. BlackBerry Priv vs Sony Xperia Z5 Edge comparison: Price BlackBerryPriv has been rolled out in Canada and the UK for CDN$899 (around Rs 44,404) and £559 (around Rs 55,708), respectively whereas Sony Xperia Z5 Premium that will be of most interest, not least because of its price. The phone is priced at Rs 63,000 – a sort of record for the Indian market. Of course, part of the reason for the high price is the sudden decline in the value of the rupee against the dollar. BlackBerry Priv vs Galaxy Sony Xperia Z5 comparison: early verdict Let’s assume you aren’t a corporation, in which case BlackBerry’s ultra secure messaging won’t be a selling point. The Priv doesn’t just need to be good to beat the Sony Xperia Z5: it needs to be so good that after holding one for a few seconds you become an evangelist and start running up to strangers in the street to tell them how awesome it is. And while we’re well disposed towards BlackBerry and have fond memories of our trusty BlackBerry Pearl, we think that’s a little bit unlikely. The Priv is shaping up to be a pretty good smartphone, but the Sony Xperia Z5 is already an outstanding one. What do you think? Should we give BlackBerry the benefit of the doubt or is the battle already won? Let us know in the comments below.
