Design For Additive Manufacturing (DFAM)in 3D Printing

    Category: Technology

We all are aware of the fact that 3D Printing/ Additive manufacturing production process requires a CAD file in STL format, But have we ever paid attention to the fact that aligning the design with the technology used for production can drastically help in production time, quality, cost reduction and various other mechanical parameters. There are many instances where the client may end up with a failed 3D Printed part in their hand due to the knowledge gap between Designing and 3D Printing. DFAM ( Design for additive manufacturing ) is the perfect solution for designing parts for 3D Printing as it eliminates all the potential errors that may occur in the production process. Tools and methods for DFAM Topology Optimization : Both shape and topology of the part can be updated using topology optimization. Traditional manufacturing processes are not capable of producing complex parts made from topology optimization. Parts consolidation : Complex parts require several sub parts that are to be assembled together. This was done as traditional manufacturing processes were not capable of handling the complexity of the part therefore multiple components were made to fit together. 3D printing has eliminated the use of multiple components in the same part by designing the part in a manner where it is produced as a single part, without the need for assembly. Lattice structures: Lattice structures are three dimensional open cell structures which have repeating unit cells topologically ordered. Incorporating lattice structures in design can help achieve high strength to low mass ratio. These structures are widely being adopted in the aerospace Industry. There are various other parameters like generative design, multi material design, multi-scale structure design etc. CONTACT US to know more about our services : LOCANAM MANJUSHA BUILDING, NEHRU PLACE, 110019 +91 9318441992 +91 7217686823 info@locanam.com www.locanam.com
