How to Choose The Right Engineering Branch?

Category: Academics

While children are children, parents take most of the decisions for them. However, after passing tenth or twelfth standard, children are at a critical juncture. It is the time when they have to decide their career. Once the decision is taken they cannot turn back. It is the point of time when one chooses a path and sets life going in a particular direction. Robert Frost has written the following lines in his poem titled “The Road not Taken’: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both…… …………… …………… Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. ( Robert Frost) display_engineering How aptly he says that you can travel ONLY on one road. Parents have certain expectations from children and often try to influence them. Children have their own dreams and ambitions. The ideas of parents may not match with the inclinations of children. Parents have other issues to consider like the amount of fees they may have to pay and the facilities they can provide. Children however, are old enough at this age to understand the financial capacity of parents. Accordingly, they try to match their career options with the time and money they can spend on a course and take the right decision. Engineering is a branch of studies that students continue to crave for. It has some kind of mesmerizing magical potential and sometimes, students are carried away by its success stories to such an extent that they completely ignore such a wide range of career options that is available today. Once it is decided that they will pursue a career in engineering the next big question is, which branch of engineering? Here are a few tips that will help you to make a wise choice: Do not choose a branch because someone else tells you to choose it. You may know someone who has chosen a branch and has climbed the ladder of success; you may not share his fortune. Your circumstances are different. Prevent yourself from being influenced at any cost. Keep your head cool, think twice, thrice, any number of times and be firm. Carry out a thorough research and find out how many branches of engineering are there, what kind of scope they have, which colleges offer the course, which college is the best for a particular course etc. You are familiar with only a few branches of engineering; remember, there are 100+ branches. Do not neglect a branch because it is too common. At the same time, do not choose a branch simply because it is uncommon. What qualifications are necessary for the course? Which examinations do you have to clear? What score is essential? Is it within your capacity? Once you know the options available and the kind of work you are expected to do if you choose a particular branch, consider whether you would really like to do that kind of work. For example, would you like to be constantly on the move and deal with brick and cement if you become a civil engineer? Would you prefer to work with chemicals in a closed laboratory if you choose chemical engineering? How many years will you require for a degree course? Do you want to do post-graduation as well? Can you afford to spend that much time in education? Perhaps, your parents are waiting for you to start earning. Can you continue your education later? Make a survey of all the colleges that offer the course. What if you do not get admission in a good college? Always keep a standby option. Last but not the least; consider the fee structure and whether you can afford it. This is your life and your career. Utilize complete freedom to choose your branch of engineering. Finally remember, as Robert Frost says at the end of the poem, your choice is going to make all the difference. I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
