Kratom is a naturally occurring herbal substance made from the leaves of a tropical tree known as Mitragyna speciosa, native to Southeast Asia. It is often marketed in health food or specialty stores as a “natural herb.” Because it is technically legal to sell over the counter, many people assume it is safe, and as a result, it is becoming quite popular in the United States. Kratom is gaining popularity in the United States because it has both opioid-like and stimulant effects and is often used because it causes euphoria, a heightened sense of arousal, an increase in energy, and pain relief.
