Bandhani is also known as Bandhej or Tie Dye or Bandhni. It s a type of tie dye practiced mainly in Rajasthan and Gujarat in India. The common patterns of bandhni sarees are dots, stripes, waves and squares. Different colours of Bandhni sarees, mainly contains natural colours like yellow, red, blue, green and black. The backgrounds of these sarees are mainly made up with dark colours and no light colours are used in these sarees. In Bandhni sarees different colours represents different meanings. While red represents a bride, a yellow background suggests a lady has become a mother recently. Bhuj, Mandvi in Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat are known for their individual varieties in Bhandhani sarees. It has been exclusively carried out by khatri community. The taste of bandhni is different from one district to another. Fabrics like Bandhni sarees are made of cotton, silk, crepe, georgette, chiffon, satin, supernet or such. As bandhni sarees contains unique wave designs and patterns in a brilliant manner The deep vibrant colours and mesmerizing block prints of bandhni sarees with zari patch borders are suitable for bride, weddings, occasions. As per evidences in Historical Texts, the first Bandhani saree was worn at the time of Bana Bhatt`s Harshacharita in a royal marriage. It was believed that wearing a Bandhani saree can bring good future to a bride. The art of bandhni is a highly skilled process, producing a variety of patterns like Leheriya, Mothra, Ekdali and Shikari depending on the manner in which the cloth is tied.
