Middle East respiratory syndrome is caused by a coronavirus (MERS-CoV), is a disease which can cause a rapid onset of severe respiratory disease in people. It was first reported in Saudi Arabia, in 2012. Most cases outside of the Middle East have been reported by people who recently travelled there.
