    Post-Surgery Exercise Tips

    Category: Health

Exercise is one of the best ways to help after Knee replacement surgery. It helps with recovery, improves circulation, and makes it easier for you to get around. Areas of concern are the quadriceps muscles on the front of the thighs, and the straight leg raise. Dr. Anoop Jhurani further explains that he had initially planned on doing orthopedic surgeries, but when he realized how difficult it was for surgeons to perform these procedures using conventional methods, he started using robotic techniques instead. Dr. Anoop Jhurani says that this has proven to be an excellent decision since it has allowed him to treat more patients at once and make them walk again faster than before. What is the Quadriceps Set? The quadriceps set is an exercise that is often recommended for people who have undergone knee surgery. This exercise helps to strengthen the quadriceps muscles, which are the muscles located in the front of the thigh. The quadriceps set can be done by sitting in a chair and placing a towel around the back of the knee. The person then bends the knee and straightens it again. This exercise should be done slowly and with control. What is the Straight Leg Raise (SLR)? The Straight Leg Raise (SLR) is a simple but important exercise for people who have had surgery on their lower extremities. This exercise helps to improve the range of motion and flexibility in the operated leg, as well as strengthen the muscles in the leg. Here’s how to do the Straight Leg Raise: 1. Lie flat on your back with both legs extended straight out in front of you. 2. Slowly raise one leg about 6-12 inches off the ground, keeping the other leg straight and still. 3. Hold this position for 5-10 seconds before slowly lowering the leg back down to the starting position. 4. Repeat this exercise 10-15 times with each leg. What is the Active Knee Extension? Active knee extension is a post-operative exercise that helps to improve the range of motion and strength in the affected leg. This exercise is performed by sitting in a chair with your affected leg extended in front of you and your foot resting on a towel. Slowly straighten your knee until your thigh is parallel to the floor and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times. How do you walk after surgery? If you’ve had surgery, your doctor will probably tell you when you can start walking again. It’s important to start slowly and build up your walking time as you get stronger. Start by walking a short distance, then rest. Slowly increase the distance and time you walk until you’re able to walk for 30 minutes at a time. To help prevent falls, use a cane or walker as recommended by your doctor or physical therapist. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes with good support. If you have any pain, stop walking and rest.
