Performing Umrah during Ramadan not only guarantees a Muslim spiritual and mental relief but also promises great rewards. The significance of performing Umrah in the month of Ramadan can be gauged by the following Hadith: Ibn `Abbâs narrates that Muhammad (PBUH) inquired a woman from Madinah: “What prevented you from embarking on the Hajj pilgrimage with us?” She replied: “We had two camels. My husband and child took one and left the other for the rest of us to ride on.” Muhammad (PBUH) then told her: “When the month of Ramadan arrives, go for ‘Umrah, because `Umrah in Ramadan is like accompanying me on Hajj.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (1764)] Scholars still debate over the fact if the performance of Umrah (at-least once in a lifetime) is compulsory on Muslims or not. Allah knows the best. Similarly, performing Umrah during the month of Ramadan is a Sunnah and not an obligation on Muslims.
