What is Cochlear Implant Surgery

Category: Health

Cochlear Implant is a fairly simple ear surgery that lasts for about 1.5 hours and involves a BTE (behind the ear) incision. To reach the inner ear, the mastoid bone behind the ear is bored and the electrode is implanted. After that, the incision is closed and a dressing is applied. The patient is frequently admitted to the hospital for observation for one night, although in other situations, the patient might be discharged home the same day as surgery. It is not especially painful, and most patients are able to return to their regular activities within 2-3 days. The balance canal function can be affected when the implant is placed in the inner ear. The patient might feel frequent dizziness for a week or two after surgery, however, this can sometimes last longer. The implant is not switched on until the incision has healed completely, which takes around 4 weeks.
