A total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical operation that involves the replacement of the damaged knee joint with an artificial one. The knee is a hinge joint that allows movement at the junction of the thigh and the lower leg. At the knee, the thigh bone (or femur) meets the shin bone of the lower leg (tibia). The end of the femur bone is removed and, then, replaced with a metal casing during a TKR. Also removed is the lower leg bone (tibia), which is replaced with a channeled plastic component with a metal stem.
