What Makes “Great” Music Great?

Category: Entertainment

There are a variety of music available out in the market and in the underground scene. To many music consumers, there’s a wide selection of different genres of music readily available out there, waiting to be heard. Music, being a large industry with so many artists competing with each other, it’s actually an understatement to call it a jungle out there. With the massive amount of songs and recordings that can literally be found anywhere, it is a known and acknowledged fact that only a very few can be classified as great, or at the very least, worthy to be listened to. Now, many of you may think that music is a very subjective matter. Some may even argue that music, to be considered great, depends on the taste or preferred genre of an individual listening to a piece of music. While this may be true, what many of you might not be aware of is that great music has a common denominator that tells the listener that it is great. And no one, regardless of genre preference, can say otherwise. The listener would automatically know that the piece is undeniably great. Let’s answer the question: what makes “great” music great? According to Audio Issues, being able to create great music requires the presence of these four elements: RHYTHM The rhythm of a song serves as its foundation. Like all things great, and all things built with the intent to last a lifetime and serve many generations, great music should have a strong foundation–therefore, a kind of rhythm that can support the overall composition of a song, hold it, and make it concrete. To supply rhythm, a song should have a beat. Now, having a beat and sustaining the rhythm doesn’t necessarily mean that the song should have drums. What we’re saying is that the song should have a steady beat to it in order to supply the rhythm in a consistent manner all throughout the duration of the song. It is a known fact that not all great songs have drums in it–just a steady, consistent beat that builds a solid rhythmic foundation. HARMONY Here lies the song’s instrumental parts–the chord progressions, the guitar riffs, and all that jazz. All these combined account for a song’s harmonic foundation to a melody. You don’t have to do complicated riffs to make your song great. It can be simple. But it has to be unique. If you think about it, plenty of songs in the market, regardless of genre, have the same chord progression with others. What makes the huge difference is how an artist presents the riffs, and plays the chords to make it his own. MELODY The melody can be considered as the most important part of any song. Why? It is what makes the song an actual song. Why, again? Take away every element in a piece of music, but retain the melody, and you will still be able to know what that song is. The melody is the soul of a song. A song with a melody that sticks to listeners, even if they can’t remember the lyrics at times, is what makes it memorable. Try this: as an artist, try to create something that will get into your inside your listeners and touch them. It doesn’t have to be complex. Something simple, as longs as it is memorable and touches them, is a piece of material that will surely succeed. INTEREST All great songs have that “awesome part” in it that we all make our friends listen to when we try to make them appreciate a song we love the same way we do. What we’re trying to say is that each piece of music you do should have its most interesting part somewhere in between. Or should we say, the “climax”–the exact point in a song where everything simply comes together. The tight rhythm, the killer chord progression, touching melody, the fills, the epic breaks and solos and perhaps the intense vocals. The interest in the song is what puts the cherry on top of every great piece of music. Combine all four elements and mix it with your own flair of individuality and innovation, and you’re sure to get to the hearts of your listeners, and eventually make it big and top the charts. Once you think you’ve made a great piece of music, share it with the rest of the world so all can hear. All you need is a platform that will allow you to do so. There are plenty of ways such as posting it on social media on various channels where there is constantly a tight competition for listener’s attention.
