The SC/ST Act was passed to stop atrocities against Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe members, to establish Special Courts for the trial of crimes against the law, and to provide aid and rehabilitation for those who had been the victims of such crimes. Discrimination against any citizen on the basis of their religion, race, caste, sex, or other characteristics is prohibited by Article 15 of the Indian Constitution. Act of 1989 for the prevention of atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Tribes: To stop atrocities against scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, the Indian Parliament passed this legislation. The Act's Section 3, which addresses crimes involving atrocities.
